Pine Ship fancied in first leg today

YULE Pine Ship, which was no match for Bamboo in the Nelson Cup on Saturday did well to run the Westiport pacer to a fairly close finish, should gain reward in the Dominion Breweries Handicap, the first leg of the double on the second day of the meeting today. Pine Ship has paced splendid races lately and he is overdue for a win. Perhaps, the hardest for him to ■ beat will be Philippa Frost, a rather unlucky third to Wing iComamnder on Saturday. She shied at paper on the track with a round to go and was left in the open from that point. Then near the finish when almost assured of second place she tried to dodge more paper and lost quite a bit of ground.

She will have a change of driver today, Bryan Court replacing Jack Smolenski, who has two runners in this event.

Waterton would have to improve very little on his first-day run to be a threat over this distance, while bold runs are also likely from Alcester, Band Music, which was forced wide on Saturday, and Jersey Boy. Rimuaser Boy is an interesting new comer to this class. He won narrowly over Sidi Rezegh on Saturday in a particularly smart time. Both he and his stablemate Katea Lad, having his first start at the meeting, will have supporters. The Blenheim-owned and trained Safe Hanover looked more than a little unlucky when she made a strong late bid for third behind Rimuaser Boy on Saturday. If she races with the same dash today she will be the one to beat in the Publicity Handicap.

Karate King and Kheredin shaped attractively on Saturday and they will have to be considered as will Sidi Rezegh, Charteris Maid and Rosewood Garrison, which made a rare bad beginning on Saturday. The on-course treble will be run on the Neale and Haddow Handicap, the Burns Philp Handicap and the Gordon Kerr Handicap.
