Surf clubs resent role
PA Wellington “Surf clubs are here to save lives, not to act as baby-sitters,” says the executive director of the Water Safety Council, Mr Mike Frohlich. Mr Frohlich said that parents do not seem to be entering into the spirit of the International Year of the Child.
“In fact, instead of concentrating on their children, many parents seem to be ignoring their basic responsibility," he said.
“They are ignoring the task of strictly supervising young children, particularly tn unsafe areas.” In the first two weeks of this year, he has seen a number of situations
where young children could have drowned.
“There were no adults nearby to go to their assistance," he said. “Surf club members are sick and tired of returning wandering young children to their parents, who are sleeping, reading or sunbathing.
“Surf clubs are there to save lives, not to act as baby-sitters.” Mr Frohlich said children under 10 account for a quarter of all drownings each year in New Zealand.
