Creche delay disappoints

The . New Brighton Creche Committee has expressed its “bitter disappointment” over the Christchurch City Council’s procrastination in proI viding a creche for the disI trict to Mrs Mary Batchelor, member of Parliament for Avon.

Mrs Batchelor said yesterday that the committee has been working very hard to get a much-needed creche. “1 am also very disappointed at the negative attitude of the council,” she said.

“My experience of city council meetings makes me aware that a referral back to the social services committee means the full council is not prepared to accept

the recommendation Of the committee.

“I am surprised that the Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) whom,’ I understand, is patron of the Canterbury Regional Committee for the Internationa! Year of the Child, would give his vote in such a way that he must know will further delay the provision of creche facilities tn New Brighton. I am particularly surprised that he is reputed to have voted in favour of the recommendation at the council's policy and finance committee meet* ing.

“If this is the attitude that is going to be adopted by our city leaders then the I.Y.C. will end up no more than a year of pious platitudes,” Mrs Batchelor said.
