Close win to N.S.W. over N.Z.

NZPA Sydney New South Wales won a cliff-hanger against New Zealand in the Australasian schools cricket championships in Sydney on Tuesday. They passed the New Zealand total of 208 for nine in [the 49th over, nine wickets down.

The hero of the win was the Waratah High School batsman, Paul Burke, who weathered a dramatic late order collapse and then hit two slashing boundaries off Picton’s medium-pacer, Russell Thomas, to win the match.

New Zealand’s captain, Anuo Nathu, again topscored for his team with a neat 62, whilst Trevor Franklin (Mount Albert Grammar) overcame the handicap of a broken bone in his foot to score 44.

Once again the N.S.W. spin twins Craig Hogan and David Palmer were the chief wicket takers with Palmer taking four for 44 and Hogan three for 49. For N.S.W., John Boyd and Ken McKay impressed with the bat. scoring 46 and 43 respectively.
