Ashburton Cup hopefuls fail at trials

Racing and trotting

By

P. J. MEIN

An out of form Star Chance snatched the feature event at the Addington trials yesterday, a race which gave little insight into Tues* day’s $6OOO Ashburton Cup.

Of the seven Cup aspirants on trial yesterday, only the Carmichael-trained Jascoe could manage a placing — a close third behind Star Chance and Bad Luck — with the remaining six headed by Rebecca’s Pride (eighth), distanced. Star Chance, never closer than eleventh in his last three starts, was third in the early rush yesterday, and was favoured with a perfect run on the outer when Jascoe wrestled the lead off the pacemaking Miss Pert with 1700 m to run. The Jack Chance six-year-old had enough in reserve in the run to the judge to master first Jascoe, then Bad Luck, and win narrowly by a neck.

The free-going Bad Luck was a plucky second after leading for the last 1500 m, with Jascoe holding third by a nose from Miss Pert.

Star Chance has his opportunity to atone for some rather lack-lustre efforts in the feature event at Motukarara on Saturday.

Another Banks Peninsula entrant seen to advantage

yesterday was Eastwood Glenfern. The Springston mare, in the wilderness since defeating Lord Module and Main Star in the Timaru Nursery Stakes will be searching for her first New Zealand win

far some 22 months when she tackles the President’s Handicap on Saturday.

Judging by the dash she showed yesterday she looks back to her best. After

tracking Augustus Rex for most of the journey, Eastwood Glenfern strode to the front in the home straight and held her advantage to the line to hold out the fastfinishing Tribunal by a neck. Tribunal will be one of Star Chance’s opponents in the Motor Corporation Handicap at Banks Peninsula. The Doyle-trained Now Charles showed youthful dash belying his ten years with a half-length victory over Brenda Bell in the main trotting event. The chestnut began well and disputed the lead with Brenda Bell in the early running, however he; was content to sit in the! trail when Brenda Bell final-:

ly reached the front 1700 m out. Now Charles lodged his challenge about 150 m out and, after a sustained struggle, mastered Brenda Bell short of the line. Tempest Tiger, a candidate

far the S5OOO fillies Flying Stakes at Addington on January 1, was an impres-

sive winner of her heat a mobile event for three-year-old fillies over 2000 m.

After leading for the last 1200 m, Tempest Tiger ran right away over the concluding stages to beat the Noble representative, Seafield Rose, by two lengths in a smart 2min 34.95, the last 800 m in 60. as. Winning Lass held Out a storming late charge by Phillippa Frost to win the other heat for three-year-olds in 2min 37.55. CO AND Cl PACERS; 2600 m—- . heat: Congo Gold It M.
