Arthur Ashe's campaign to [qualify for a place in the Colgate Masters final next February got off to a bright start when he beat the Australian, Ray Ruf- • fels, in the first round of the : £Aust2oo,ooo Nabisco New South Wales open tennis tournament ! yesterday. ' Ashe (U.S.), the third seed, beat I Ruffels, 6-3. 6-4, to gain 12 valuj able Colgate bonus points. ! The women’s first-round I matches brought early sensations [when the third seed. Regina Marisikova (Czechoslovakia) was knocked out of the tournament and the top seed, Wendy Turnbull, won a thrilling three-setter after looking beaten. Miss Marsikova lost to the ex patriate Australian, Cynthia Doerner, 4-6, 4-6.
