Christmas mail up 6 p.c.
About 205.000 letters were sorted at the Chief Post Office on Monday, the greatest number sorted in a day in the last two years, according to the manager of postal services (Mr R. A. Brown). He said that on Monday the amount of Christmas mail sorted at the Post Office was 6 per cent up on last year’s figures. The number of parcels coming through the post was about the same as in other years. Delays in sorting Christmas mail had been less this year than in previous years. More than 100 youths had been employed this year to help -with mail deliveries.
About 30 additional persons were working in the mail room during the Christmas period. This was slightly down on the number of extra staff employed last Christmas.
People were taking advantage of the cheaper 7c card rate. Sales of 7c stamps were still very high.
