Race with tide

Tow-truck drivers beat the rising tide to rescue a stranded Land-Rover from the Sumner Estuary last evening. The vehicle’s driver had ploughed 300 metres through the soft Estuary mud on a shell-collecting expedition before the Land-Rover sank to its axles, said a spokesman for the S.O.S. Breakdown Service.

The rising tide was lapping at the doors of the Land-Rover by the time it was pulled out by two S.O.S. trucks, including a four-wheel-drive vehicle. “We were lucky to save it. I have never heard of anyone driving deliberately into the Estuary before,” said a spokesman for the firm.
