NZPA Perth! Rain washed out the last; 85 minutes of plav yester-j day on the fourth day of the second test, leaving Australia to score another 317 runs to win the game on the last day today after its fast bowler, Rodney Hogg, blast-1 ed England's second innings! apart with five wickets.
Hogg’s five for 57 from 17 overs helped to dismiss England for 208 at tea, giving it an over-all lead of 307.
When the players raced from the field with driving rain about to sweep across the ground. 35 minutes after tea. Australia was 11 for one with England's own pace bowlers, Bob Willis and John Lever, in full cry.
Lever made the quick breakthrough for England by having the opener, Rick Darling, caught by Geoff Boycott at mid-on in the second over for five.
Hogg’s high-speed attack gave Australia a chance of winning a match that England seemed to have a stranglehold on when it resumed its second innings yesterday morning at 58 for no wicket, after Australia was ail out for 190 in replv to England’s first-innings 309.
Hogg struck in the second over of the day when he had Geoff Boycott out I.b.w. for 23 without addition to the overnight score and then in his fifth over he took two wickets with consecutive balls to dismiss Boycott’s opening partner, Graham Gooch, and the captain, Mike Brearley, to make England 93 for three.
