Genesis and Matai Dreamer likely duo

Special correspondent Auckland Genesis and Matai Dreamer created big impressions when they campaigned in the North last season and they seem likely to consolidate their high ranking in the Waikato Carousel at Cambridge tonight. Genesis was the beaten favourite in the New Zealand Derby at Addington on November 18 but he would not have been suited by the way that race was run. He' was only seventh after trying to make up ground from| back in the field in a sprint-I home affair. He was unlucky the pre-1 vious time when fifth on an earlier day of the New Zealand Cup Carnival. That outing followed a win on a wet track at Forbury Park in October by 16 lengths, beating Kintyre, Sovereign and Matai Dreamer. Genesis was sent north to be trained by the R. C. and

B. Purdon partnership at I Clevedon three weeks ago and has done well in the ■ meantime. ; In the same form he dist played at Forbury Park, I Genesis will take a power of . beating tonight but he will , need to be at his very best t to contain what is an excellent line-up of three-year-olds. Matai Dreamer, one of the ’ most talented young horses to come out of Southland in ‘ recent years, finished a cred[jitable fourth in the Derby j after winning his previous I start at Addington. Follow- ' I ing scratchings Matai Dreajmer will start from No. 8 ; behind the mobile barrier ’ tonight and, if he can secure 1 a trail, promises to be a big ’ threat. Captain Forward and t Scoot look back to their cap--1 able best following their ■ splendid showings in the ' Thames Golden Mile on December 9 and they command > the greatest respect. 1 Dawn Mist and Sonnellino

are the tightest assessed pair in tonight’s contest — being on C 5 marks — but Dawn Mist may be the better prospect through drawing the front line.

Passable was a costly failure at Alexandra Park last Saturday but he is too good to dismiss because of that. Hanover Scottish, Titan Bay and Stormy Affair have indicated fine promise such this term to suggest they will not be forlorn chances.

Waitere, a fast-finishing second to Blue Schell at Alexandra Park last Saturday, looks a strong prospect for the second leg of the Morrinsville Club’s T.A.B. double. Had Waitere worked clear a little sooner, he may well have overhauled Blue Schell instead of going down by a long neck. Only his draw — on the outside of the second row — seems likely to inconvenience Waitere which has been in very smart form this term.
