Hire bikes
Visitors to Christchurch who wish to see the sights from bicycles are well catered for. The Cycle Trading Company, (Phone 63-760) at 226 Manchester Street, has 25 standard cycles for hire, at $2 per day. or s7' per week. There is a tandem which is in steady demand. The cycles are nurely for about-town trips and a $5 bond is reouired with each transaction. For those who want to r enture further afield, tent-a-bike Limited are next door to the Avon Theatre, in the Avon Car Park building, at 82 Worcester Street. They welcome customers who want to take bikes on extended tours, and are happy to. have them sent back by rail or air, after one-way trios. Some of Rent-a-bike's customers have 'ddden. their bikes on North Island touring trips, and manv come from large tourist hotels in the city. For, a small extra
charge bikes are deliverd to such customers. All touring bikes are fully eouipped with carrier bags, locks and chains, water bottles etc, and for a small extra cost (25 cents per day), can be insured against theft. Children’s seats can be hired and city and touring mans are available. Another service that Rent-a-bike offers is luggage storage for those with packs. Often these are Youth Hostel members. who may or may not hire bikes. Hire charges for standard bikes are 50 cents per hour. $3 per day and $l5 per week. For touringbikes and tandems it is $1 per hour, $6 per day and $25 per week. Z small amount is required as a bond. Rent-a-bike are open seven days a week and their phone number is 64409. As the Rent-a-bike brochure points out. Christchurch is ideal for sightseeing from bicycles. Besides its generally flat terrain, the city caters for its commuting, shopping, sporting and leisure cyclists with scenic cycling lanes through such places as Hagley Park. For energetic hill cyclists, the view from the Summit. Road is well worth the effort, and bikes may be transported across Lyttelton Harbour on the Diamond Harbour ferry.
