Visa cards
Sir, — Referring to D. Currie’s letter (December 4) I would like to explain that the Visa card debate is not caused by “stick-to-our-old-ways” attitudes. No-one is objecting to a credit card system per se, but to the type of system Visa is. Overseas credit systems, such as Diners and American Express offer credit, whereas Visa is a debit scheme. It is, in fact, a plastic cheque, used exactly like our present cheques, though probably more convenient. There are no facilities for credit, unless a special arrangement is made with the bank, and for this one pays 18 per cent per annum, which is higher than present bank charges. I am all for progress, but not progress at any price. A properly constructed New Zealand credit scheme could well be progress, but in its present form is Visa? I am not against progress, or credit cards generally, but against Visa as it stands. — Yours, etc.,
VIRGINIA JUDD. December 5, 1978.
