Flights back to normal
Tasman flights would be back to normal today, after delays caused by a 24-hour strike of Australian airport staff, said the southern area sales manager for Qantas (Mr K. Reid) yesterday. Travellers faced delays of up to 20 hours because one Qantas flight was cancelled and another flight delayed, on Tuesday. A 7478 jumbo jet, with 356 passengers left Christchurch yesterday morning, for Melbourne — 16 hours after it was due to leave, said Mr Reid.
The backlog of passengers was still being cleared yesterday.
But there is still a chance of more delays later this week, because of the uncertain industrial climate in Australia.
The dispute arose after pay increases were given to airlines’ ground staff belonging to the Transport Workers’ Union. The decision resulted in demands for more money from other airport workers.
