Killing delays cost farmers ' $9M’

PA Wellington Wairarapa sheepfarmers lost S9M in the 1977-78 season because of delays and inadequate killing space for the region’s stock, the Meat Industry Authority has been told. The statement was made by Mr D. Baker, a farm management consultant and national vice-president of the Society of Farm Management. The authority was hearing an application by Pacific Freezing (N.Z.), Ltd, to build a three-chain freezing works at Oringi, near Dannnevirke. An application by the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Meat Company, Ltd, for a freezing

works at Takapau has also to be considered. The authority comprises Messrs I. Thomas (chairman), T. G. McNab, E. Roberts, and T. P. Kelly. Mr Baker said he had arrived at the amount of S9M by calculating the delays experienced by what he considered an average sheep farm in the area. Total sheep and beef stock units in the six Wairarapa counties in June, 1977, were 5,230,000. The average cost of delays per stock unit was $1.90. The total cost to the region was $9,940,000, of which cattle delays accounted for 10 per cent.
