Fellowship winner in Himalayas

Philip Temple, the Christchurch author who has been awarded the 1979 Katherine Mansfield memorial fellowship, will not travel to Menton, in the south of France, until next year.

He has first to complete a trek in the Himalayas with Tenzing Norgay. Mr Temple, who has published 10 books, including “Philip Temple’s South Island” and “Ways to the Wilderness,” was recently awarded the fellowship. It will enable him to ; spend some time in Menton, i where Katherine Mansfield I spent the last few years of her life.

However, Mr Temple left on Sunday to join a party of 13 trekking in the Himalayas, studying Sherpa culture. Mr Temple is the only New Zealander in the party. He expects to spend a month there and will then meet his wife and two children at Katmandu. They will all travel on to France.
