Heavy surf pounds fishing boat

This Christchurch fishing boat was badly damaged in pounding surf, and another ran aground, near the mouth of the Waimakariri River yesterday. Two fishermen managed to reach shore after the 5 m Clare from Scarborough, drifted into the surf and was rolled over and over by the breakers. The skipper. Mr Tony Turnbull, and Mr Douglas Willetts, had been fishing off the rivermouth when the Clare was swamped by a freak wave. “They couldn’t start the engines again, so she just drifted inshore. They were

lucky to get off before it was tossed over.” said Mr Michael Bellani, of Kairaki, who helped rescue the stricken craft. The cabin of the SMOO boat was smashed when it • was dumped on the beach sand about 100 metre* north of the rivermouth. The Clare was eventually towed on to the (reach by a Land-Rover, and bailed out. It was then refloated and towed to the Kairaki slip. Earlier, a smaller fishing boat from Kaiapol had run aground lust soul** of the rivermouth. Volunteers helped refloat it.
