Success and heartbreak

The Riccarton owner-trainer, Wattie Lattimer, who will mount a double edged assault on the Hornby Centennial Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday with his stable hopefuls, Watelse and Rosie’s Boy, tasted the bittersweet pill of success and heartbreak at Beaumont last Saturday. Latimer took two horses to Beaumont, Wat Next and Rosie's Boy. Rosie’s Boy duly won the feature race on the programme, but Wat Next, after finishing fifth in the Millers Flat Highweight, collapsed and died. A six-year-old by Causeur, Wat Next was from the Beaumaris mare, Swanky, dam of the fine open-class gallopers, Watallen, whose 21 wins included a New Zealand Cup, and Unlucky In Love.

Swanky also left Watelse, which will be striving for honours in the second leg of the double at Riccarton on Saturday and the Knight’s Romance mare Miss Mannequin, dam of Rosie’s Boy, also engaged at Riccarton.
