Changing trade patterns between New Zealand and the west coast of North America and the West Indies may encourage a new generation of container vessel (pictured) to use Lyttelton. The Columbus Louisiana is the first of three new reefer container ships due to be put into service on the New ZealandCarribbean - Venezuela - French West Indies-United
States Guif-Mexico run by the Columbus Line. The company has no South Island port of call; it works only through North Island terminals. Lyttelton Harbour Board figures show that about 80 per cent of cargoes on Columbus ships at Wellington have to be transshipped to the South Island. Similar quantities are sent by rail to Wellington
from the South Island to be exported in the same vessels.
Last year brought a big rise in cargoes from and to the west coast of North America and the West Indies going through Lyttelton. The Columbus Louisiana will enter service next February. The vessel will he able to carry? 900 containers, 650 of them below deck and 480 of them refrigerated.
Two sister ships are due for completion next June and October.
