New taxi charges
Taxi fares in Christchurch will change within the next two or three weeks. This was to compensate for an 11 per cent increase in minimum wage rates given to taxi-drivers last October, said the president of the Canterbury branch of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation (Mr G. T Mather). The flag-fall would be lowered fr< m 75c to 70c.
meaning that short trips v.'ould be cheaper. Fares up to $1.60 would I remain the same. After that they would rise by a I small amount: $1.60 to ! $1.65, $1.85 to $1.95, and so on. The extra charge for telephone hire would stay ! at 35c. Mr Mather said the new | fares would come into ef- I feet as taxi metres were converted.
