Birdie burst saves Charles
Bob Charles had every reason to allow his usually impassive face to split into a wide grin yesterday, as his brilliant birdie on the last hole of the Air New Zealand Shell Open golf classic at Auckland gave him the 515.000 winner’s cheque and his first big victory for four years.
When Charles teed off on the sixteenth hole he was one shot behind the Australian “golfing machine,” Graham Marsh, who was already in the club house, and it seemed that Charles would need a miracle if he was to tie with or beat Marsh. However, he birdied the sixteenth and parred the seventeenth, and after a fine tee-shot on the final hole Charles floated his wedge-shot high on to the green and the Titirangi crowd went wild when the ball stopped only 60cm from the hole. The birdie putt was a formality and the title was his.
