Seat-belt campaign ineffective
PA Wellington The publicity campaign on the wearing of seat belts, held in May this year, had had little effect, the council of the Automobile Association heard in Wellington. The secretary-general of (the association (Mr R. W. ; Lithgow) presented the ! council with information provided by the Ministry of Transport. Mr Lithgcrw said that the publicity campaign did not appear to have been responsible for a deserved increase in seat-belt wearing, from 61 per cent in November, 1977, to 73 per cent in July, 1978. He quoted overseas be-fore-and-after . studies of such campaigns which had shown no noticeable improvement. "The whole question of publicity campaigns in relation to seat belts and anything else is under surveillance,’’ Mr Lithgow said.
