Cricket Cricket leaders maintain strong position
Sumner, the leader of the : senior suburban cricket competition, finished in a strong' position against Woolston W.M.C. on Saturday, in spile of indifferent batting earlier in the day. After a late start, as occurred in most other matches Sumner’s first three batsmen, Peter Sargison, Roger Campbell and Tony McKendry, paved the way for a good total but the middle and' lower order batsmen let Ihe side down.
The Woolston fielding was sharp and keen while its bowling was always accurate and testing, Norm Sloan being the most impressive, i Having been bowled out for 171, Sumner fought back' well to have Woolston 55 for six at stumps.
! After being sent in to bat, j Waitham pul up the credit'able total of 186 for six at i slumps against Hoon Hay W.M.C. Ewan Wright, Steve Holden and Mike Eddington all produced useful scores, while Jim Bennie was Hoon Hay’s leading wicket-taker. Hornby made 85 for one against Upper Riccarton at Riccarton Domain, to which Barry F urness contributed 43.! At Edgar Mclntosh Park, Merivale-Papanui made 99' for seven in the restricted batting time it had against Belfast.
