Advice in the mountains

A first-aid pamphlet, on strong, waterproof, synthetic paper, has been produced by the School of Mountaineering at Wanaka as a quick reference for trampers, deerstalkers, mountaineers and other outdoor people. The idea of the pamplet arose from discussions at the school’s mountaineering courses where many of the participants had completed first-aid courses but were rusty on the finer points of treating an injured person in the mountains.

The pamphlet was produced on synthetic paper to avoid its becoming a soggy mess when persons

negotiated a swollen river, and also because it was light and easy to fit in a pack. The pamphlet, costing 50c was financed by the school after unsuccessful attempts to obtain Government grants. The school will hold six courses this summer for experienced and amateur outdoor enthusiasts. These include an alpine-skills couse for the experienced tramper. a general mountaineering course, an alpine pass crossing, ice climbing, a kayak expedition, and , ski mountaineering. Further details can be obtained by writing to the

school at P. O. Box 204, Wanaka. Mountaincraft courses at Arthur’s Pass are being organised this summer for secondary school children by the Outdoor Education Centre.

The adventure camp holiday programmes are for boys and girls aged between 11 and 13, and mountaincraft courses for those between 12 and 16. There is a limit of 28 pupils in each course. The organiser Mr J. Stalker, said the courses had been running for many years at Arthur’s Pass and they were always full. ___
