School libraries

Sir, — With reference to your article. “Support for library recommendation,”

(November 29), it is to be hoped that the lack of reaction to the report to the

Minister of Education from the working party on school libraries does not indicate that it will suffer the same fate as other recommendations about school libraries in past education reports and disappear without trace. The former Minister, Mr Gandar, having set up the working party, seems to have ignored its report; it remains to be seen whether his successor will pay it any more atten- " tion. Meanwhile libraries in ’ New Zealand schools will, continue to lag behind those' in Australia, the United States, Canada, and even Britain in provision of adequate staff, and hence in provision of services which affect the whole curriculum. —Yours, etc., PATRICIA SMART. November 29, 1978.
