Physicist ‘out’

NZPA-Reuter Vienna The Jewish physicist, Beniamin Levich, the most prominent scientist to leave the Soviet Union, has arrived in Vienna still surprised that almost seven years of waiting for an exit visa had ended. “It is so strange,” Professor Levich told reporters at Vienna Airport. “It is a kind of miracle.”

Professor- Levich, aged 61, a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, and his wife, Tanya,

’were greeted by their sons, Alexander, aged 34. and Evgeny, aged 30, who emigrated to the West in 1975. Mrs Levich suffers from heart trouble, and the couple said they would probably seek medical treatment before going to Israel. Appeals by a University of London professor, Brian Spalding; a United States senator, Edward Kennedy; the New York-based Committee of Concerned Scientists; and others had been instrumental in winning his right to emigrate, he said.
