Customs’ new boat

PA Auckland The Minister of Customs (Mr Wilkinson) was whisked around Auckland Harbour yesterday on the new Customs cutter Hawk (right). The trip came after the launching of the new boat, which will be used in the fight against drug smuggling. The Hawk is the first boat owned by the Customs Department for nearly a century — for the last 100 years Customs officers have used chartered boats. The Hawk was built at a cost of nearly $50,000, and is intended primarily for harbour work; a 13m, ocean-going launch may also be bought. Mr Wilkinson said that the Hawk signified “the beginning of a new era” for Customs. “It will rair our Customs work to international standards,” he said.
