Mr Leon Larsen, aged 51, was swept away when a school party he was leading tried to cross the swollen Anti-Crow River near Arthur’s Pass on November 23. A girl in the group suffered a broken leg when she was dashed against rocks by the torrent. Mr P. Shard, a field officer with the council, has been in Christchurch investigating the incident. He said he was confident everything possible had been done in the right manner, including the preparation for the trip and the experience of the party’s leaders and the group itself. He wanted to correct any: misapprehension about the organisation of such trips by Burnside High School or any other school. However, he said, he could not comment further on the circumstances of the tragedy until an inquest had been held into Mr Larsen’s death. For this reason he I could not say whether he believed the accident could; have been prevented.
