‘Runners must register’

All runners- had to be registered before they would be allowed to start in the DB Great Westland Marathon, the president of the Canterbury Athletic Centre (Mr Don Mackenzie) said last evening.

The Greymouth club, which is affiliated to the Canterbury centre, had intended to open the race, from Greymouth to Hokitika today, to all-comers.

“It is not a fair deal on registered athletes if the West Coast is allowed to have a different set of rules.” Mr Mackenzie said. “All competitors must be registered — this is 'the message I have conveyed to the president of. the ’ Greymouth club (Mr B. Bowden). It is not my intention that people should be stopped running,” he said. However, Mr J. Stuart, of Hokitika >the marathon liaison officer, said late last night that the organisers would not try to stop non-registered runners from running, even though it would convey the Canterbury association’s edict to the runners. He said the marathon was not being run under N.Z.A.A.A. jurisdiction and the Canterbury association’s announcement had come too late.
