PA Wellington Because more than 80 per cent of foreign nurse graduates failed their American state licensing examinations, future graduates, including New Zealanders, who wish to nurse in the United States will have to sit a qualifying examination, the United States Embassy has announced. Overseas examinations are already organised by the United States Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools for foreign nurses who wish to secure occupational preference visas to work in the United States as registered nurses. However, these one-day examinations, which test nursing and English language proficiency, have not been compulsory. Regulations are now being made by the United States Departments of State and Labour to make the certificate mandatory for an occupational visa and labour certificate. The first certificate examination 'for New Zealanders will be held on April 4, 1979. Applications for the examination close with the commission in Philadelphia on December 29, 1978. Application forms and examination details can be obtained from the New ZealandUnited States Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 3465, Wellington, or the cultural affairs officer at the United States Embassy.
