Labourers to meet
Local-body labourers in Canterbury will hold stopwork meetings in the next week to hear reports on progress in their award talks. The South Island secretary of the Labourers’ Union (Mr W. B. Brown) said that the employers had made a final offer of 10 per cent, but the union claimed that a 142 per cent increase in wages I was necessary to maintain I relativity with local-body’ 1 drivers. The union is also seeking ian industry allowance of $6.60 a week to retain parity with the drivers. Mr Brown said that conciliation talks would resume in February. The award will expire in March.
