Frank Muir goes into print
Frank Muir Goes into ... By Frank Muir and Simon Brett, Robson Books. 144 pp. $9.95. When Frank Muir “goes into” a subject. with or without radio producer Simon Brett, he can usually be relied on for a good laugh. The two provide it in this book adapted from their radio series. The programmes, on such topics as marriage, sport, and food, also featured Alfred Marks and while the book has to dispense with his particular talents, it transfers well the mixture of comment and quotes, jokes and idiotic advertisements to the printed page.
“Frank Muir Goes Into . . .” has an easy format of quick jokes first and then the comments and apt quotations next on each subject, all interspersed with a wide variety of whimsical illustrations. While the humour is essentially British, the jokes vary in style, considerably so most readers should find at least something to laugh about in each chapter. The slim book is easy to read in one sitting but it is to its credit that all but the most dispeptic reader should be tempted then to go more quietly through it again to savour certain lines. —BARRY HOLLAND
