Clutha scheme
Sir, — Mr Gair claims that the re-election of the (Central) Otago member of Parliament, Mr Cooper, indicates a mandate for the Government to proceed with Scheme F of the Clutha development. This is nonsense, as the two major par* ties offered the electors Hobson’s choice; either National’s Scheme F, flooding 3970 ha of land, or Labour’s proposal which floods 3550 ha — a difference of only 420 ha — hardly an election issue. Cromwell township is inundated to the same extent by both schemes. Obviously the election in Central Otago was fought on issues other than the Clutha hydro devel-
opment, which people have put up with for 15 years. Mr Gair would be better advised to take his mandate from a recent survey of householders in Central Otago — 54 per cent of whom were against his Government’s Scheme F. — Yours, etc., D. L. JACKSON. November 29, 1978.
