Unusual and interesting jewellery show may become annual event
What must be a first for Christchurch was a showing this week of han d-crafted jewellery produced by Jade Spectrum. In a semi-formal atmosphere models wearing black evening gowns walked among the guests, giving them the opportunity.. to see specially designed pieces at close range. As each model appeared the Christchurch fashion compere, Pieter Stewart, added sparkle to the show by giving brief descriptions and outlining design detail.
Jade Spectrum's team of designers had obviously spent many long hours producing up-to-the-minute designs for versatile wear-) ing. At one time all precious stones were considered too garish for daytime. Now, suddenly, thanks to modern designers, they have become a top fashion accessory to be worn anywhere at any time.
Most of the designs at this show were in fine gold with one or three small stones. Matching
pendant, bracelet and ring sets were prominently featured.
A striking and obviously popular piece was a gold-and-garnet bracelet.
Prices were as varied as the designs themselves — from a pair of sterling silver earrings at $22 to a magnificently handcarved 420-carat solid opal fish at $5OOO.
Included among the pieces that caught my eye was a carved coral-and-gold pendant, an Italian rope chain and a fine gold ring with a small sapphire set to one side.
The gold knot-rings were an ideal modern replacement for the traditional signet rings.
On completion of the show, guests mingled to handle, discuss and generally admire the designs and it was obvious those present knew their jewel--1 e r y . Mrs Mervyn McKenzie, of Jade Spectrum, made the point that, unlike most fashion items, jewellery is timeless, ageless and a jolly good in’ vestment in the present inflationary time.
Mrs McKenzie also told i me that Jade Spectrum j hoped to make their i jewellery show an annual ■ event for Christchurch.
