New economics professor
i r Professor Richard Manning, an associate professor '' of economics at the Univer- ; sity of New South Wales, - has been appointed to a . chair in economics at the University of Canterbury. Professor Manning, aged' '[3s, is an economic theorist j with special interests in the ’economics of education, . information, growth, and ‘ international trade, and in ‘ the theory of general econ- ’ omic equilibrium. He has [ published many papers in ’ economics journals, and has ’ spoken at national and international conferences <rf ■ economists. 1 He was educated at King 1 Edward Technical College in Dunedin, and at the Univer- ; sity of Otago where he completed a B.A. degree in 1964. In 1966 he was awarded ’ the Bank of New South 1 Wales scholarship at the University of Canterbury, and completed an M.A. ; degree there with first class honours in economics in 1967. From 1969 to 1971 he worked on a Ph.D. while lecturing at La Trobe Uni-1 [versity, and completed this! jin 1972.
He was appointed a lie* turer in economics at the University of Canterbury in 1972, and became a senior lecturer in 1973. In 1974 he was appointed a senior lecturer at the University of New South Wales, where he has been an associate professor since 1976. Professor Manning will take up his new position in the middle of next year. Three lone-serving professors who are retiring from the University of Canterbury, have been made emeritus professors by the University Council. Professor A. Crowther, who will retire in January, has been at the university almost 40 years, the last 21 years as head of the psychology and sociology de» partment. Professor J. C. Garrett, who retired at the end of the academic year, has be n at the university almost 30 years as head of the English department.
Professor D. A. Kidd, who will retire in January, has !been at the university 21 'years as head of the classics (department.
