’Bait season over

Westport reporter

The 1978 whitebait season ended in the South Island yesterday. Buyers and fishermen throughout Buller report that the season has been only average. “It was good at times,” one buyer said. “But those times were not many.” The Buller River seemed to be the most lucrative for fishermen this season, but big catches were also made in the Orowaiti.

Further north the Mokihinui yielded very few big catches but there were reports of isolated big hauls in other smaller rivers and creeks. In spite of the poor season, visitors from outside the district have continued to flock to riverbanks, and while the season might have been only average, whitebait were still flowing up the Buller River yesterday and one fisherman caught several kilograms.
