New mile record likely tomorrow

A new national mile race record is quite a possibility when a top-class field contests t he Pan Am Mile with its basic slake of $17,500 at Addington Raceway tomorrow.

The present record t f Imin 57s was established in{ the Miracle Mile, fore-runner of the Pars Am Mile, by Young Quinn when he beat : Master Dean and Hi Foyle! 1 in 1974. The outcome of tomorrow’s race will probably centre on the ability of the four-year-olds, Roydon Scott and Lord Module, to withstand the speed and experience of Trusty Scot, Sapling, Belmer’s Image and company, all of which have fine dash records. The field includes Nimble 1 Yankee, Wee Win, Palestine 1 and Belmer’s Image, the first 1 four to finish in last year’s I contest. With the exception of Nimble Yankee, all have some sound recent form to < their credit and they look

capable of getting into the finish. Even Nimble Yankee cannot be left out of calculations. Luck has been right against him since he finI ished resolutely for second

has the right form for the race. Last time out he beat all but Wee- Win after pacemaking in the Allan Matson Free-for-all on November 18. Four nights earlier he made short work of his rivals over one mile in Imin 59.5 s and he could have improved immensely on that time had any serious challenges eventuated. Truty Scot must be a leading contender after his fine free-for-all win on November 10. He has drawn inside Roydon Scott at No. 2 and should the last named adopt his usual role of pacemaker. Trusty Scot could well obtain another perfect trail and then outsprint his younger rival over the final 200 m. Lord Module has drawn

badly and will start from the outside of the second line. However, it is not an impossible position for any horse lucky enough to secure a reasonable run.

Sapling and Belmer’s Image should do Southland stables proud and a win for either would occasion no surprise. And then there is Wee Win, while Palestine can never be regarded as a forlorn chance in this type of race. In addition there is Rocky Tryax, third in the New Zealand Cup, and the only runner in the event with no time over one mile. Waralene, Locarno and Hurricane Squire look three of the better chances in the second leg, the A.G. Jamieson Handicap.
