Smart trial by Mun Lee

Special correspondent Hastings Man Lee galloped into strong contention for tomorrow’s open sprint at Wanganui with a keen final trial at Hastings yesterday morning. Fast work was mainly confined to the plough which provided good footing. Mun Lee had to be hard held in a warm-up lap at half-pace. She then started to stride out from the 1000 m on the second lap and ran the last 800 m in 50.35, the final 600 m in 37.35. She finished full of running and is obviously close to her best again.

The trainer, Don Sellwood, scratched Mun Lee from last Saturday’s Woodville meeting after the horse had stood on a nail and bruised a hoof. She looks fully recovered.

Her stablemate, Frist, also worked well suggesting she could make it three wins on end in the Pitkethley Handicap. She was sent over two 600 m sprints, the first in 38s and the second in 38.35. Snell sauntered over 800 m easily in 50.25, which represented a good trial for the Western High-weight. He disappointed his trainer, Linton Cullen, at Woodville last Saturday but the hard ground ’may have tied him up on that occasion. Manuahi cut out 1000 m in

Imin 2.75, the last 600 m in 375. Ron Saxon is thinking of starting the grey mare in next Tuesday’s Dulcie Stakes at Cambridge. Kanga’s Lad turned on the speed in the early stages of his 1000 m workout and finished well in Imin 2s, the final 600 m in 37.75. He looks well. Pennevari worked in from the 1000 m peg, running the last 800 m in 49.95, the final 600 m in 36.85.
