New retail award

Most shop assistants will soon be paid double-time for working on Saturdays after settlement of the retail (non-food) award in Christchurch vesterday. The award co-ordinator for the Shoo Employees’ Asociation (Mr R J. Campbeili said that double-time would be paid to casuals and nart-timers as well a< full-time staff, working on Saturdays. supermarket award last week. At present, shop assistants get paid time-and-a-half until 6.30 p.m.. 1 then double-time until closing on Saturdays. The settlement also provides for a wage increase > which varies from 8.6 per cent to 10.8 per cent, according to grade. This amount was offered by the employers’ assessors at the last conciliation talks before ' they were adjourned. In the interim, the grocery and supermarket award ■ was settled, under the threat of a strike at Christmas.
