Australia was the main tourist market but in the I , last year the number of Australians visiting New Zea-' [land had fallen by 11 per! I cent. For the year ended July! |3l, 129,000 Australian tourjists had come to New Zea-! [land. I Australians were now I [being attracted to more exotic places such as Singapore and North America by cheaper airfares and increased advertising. Of the S22M spent on! tourist publicity in Australia [ last year only SI.7M had, been spent by New Zealand,' [yet New Zealand attracted ; I more than 22 per cent of the' ; market. I “We are not putting enough money into promotion, as Australians are still travelling in just as great a inumber,” said Mr Mains.
