‘’Unhappy retirement’

PA Wellington Mr H. J. Walker, the defeated Minister of Social Welfare, has been sent a telegram wishing him the most “reviled and unhappy retirement ever experienced by a New Zealand ex-politi-cian.”

The message was sent by a Christchurch Health Department officer, Mr Mike Waghome, who has been involved in heated public controversey with Mr Walker.

Mr Walker was the member of Parliament for Papanui. The text of the telegram, which reads: “May I sincerely wish you the most reviled

and unhappy retirement ever experienced by a New Zealand ex-politician,” was released by Mr Walker.

In an interview, Mr Waghorne said he had sent the telegram as Mr Walker had attempted to have him dismissed from the Health Department.

“I’m only too pleased to see him out of office,” he said.

Mr Waghome is employed by the Health Department as an assistant management services officer and is involved in planning geriatric services. He is also secretary of the National Gay Rights Coalition.
