Farmers angry about charges

North Canterbury farmers want to know the reasons for increased killing charges. The North Canterbury division of Federated Farmers has decided to ask the Government to give the Meat Board access to submissions for increased charges made by freezing works. "As fanners we have no means of scrutiny. It is long past time that we, as the producers who have to foot the bill and cannot pass on the cost, have the right to scrutinise,” said the president of the North Canterbury division of Federated Fanners (Mr G. E. Rennie) yesterday.

Mr Rennie said he had been “amazed” to read that the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s annual accounts had shown the second-high-est profit in. its 97-year history.

Farmers were “angry and frustrated” about this latest increase in killing charges, he said.

Increased killing charges were announced on November 17. The cost of sheep and lamb processing rose between 17 and 20 per cent. Cattle costs rose between 12 and 15 per cent.
