Sewage smell warning

I The Christchurch Drainage Board last evening gave yet 'another warning that, because of equipment malfunction, people living near the I sewage-treatment works might experience some unpleasant odours. This time, according to the chairman, of the board’s construction treatment and works committee (Mr J. deC. Hanafin), a bearing which , supports the rotating distributor mechanism in one of the new tower filters appears to have failed. This means that the filter will be out of use “over the next few days” to allow , urgent inspection of the bearing. Dismantling and reassembly of the bearing and the distributor arms will take about two weeks “because of the awkwardness of the operation.” The construction of the distributor is apparently so complex that considerable time is required to inspect it properly. “Measures will be taken to, limit the amount of odour pro-i duction during this period asi much as possible,” Mr Hanafin said.
