Firemen not seeing red

PA Wellington Wellington fire engines will no longer have to stop at red lights, en route to emergencies. The firemen yesterday rescinded a decision made earlier this month to stop at traffic lights and other intersections where norma! traffic was reottired to stop. They will now obey the law which allows fire engines to drive through red lights at no more than 20 km/h if their lights are flashing, their siren is on,

and if they take care to avoid accidents. The chairman of the Wellington branch of the Central Region Fire Brigades’ Union (Mr W. McArthur) said yesterday that stopping at lights during the last month had “brought more danger than it solved.” “The public appeared to be completely confused by what we were doing. Our drivers felt that the public’s indecisiveness was creating many near-collisions,” he said.
