Scholarship for tutor
Mr M. E. Friedberg, the tutor in charge of foreign languages at the Christchurch Technical Institute, has been awarded a Goethe Institute scholarship to study in Germany for seven weeks early next year. Mr Friedberg, who has taught at the institute for six years, is the only one of six New Zealanders awarded the scholarship for next year to come from the South Island. His is the first such scholarship awarded to a technical institute tutor. In Germany, Mr Friedberg will study the country's customs, culture, and methods of teaching German to foreigners. When the scholarship ends in late February, he will stay on for several weeks, as part of his industrial refresher leave, to study the work of interpreters and new methods of languagelaboratory teaching. In 1976, Mr Friedberg was given a Japan Foundation scholarship to study in that country for seven weeks.
