Avon ‘rubbish belt'
The Avon was a "rubbish conveyer,” Cr Mollie Clark told a meeting of the Christchurch Town Hall board of management She was especially concerned about the section of the river which flowed past the Town Hall: “the prime viewing area” in I the city. She had received a numI ber of complaints from 1 residents who were embarrassed that tourists might
see “the often repulsive” debris which" floated past the Town Hall. “Because of the shallow water, this grubby stuff more or less stops there.” Cr Clark said. “Surely in the Avon River we have a natural asset which should be sparkling clear.” The meeting agreed with Cr Clark to write to the Christchurch Drainage Board about the matter.
