Shipping line withdraws

PA Auckland The Ace Shipping Line has decided to pull out of the New Zealand trade because it cannot obtain sufficient Producer Board cargoes.

The United Statesowned line entered the New Zealand-North America run earlier this year offering competitive freight rates, about 15 per cent below the established lines.

The company made several attempts to get Wool Board and Meat Board cargoes, and although it received some Dairy Board support there was insufficient cargo to make the service pay. The Meat Board and Wool Board have regular contracts with the established container lines.

A company spokesman at Auckland said that Ace would continue its Austra-lia-North America service, and keep its options open on returning to New Zealand.

The line is credited with holding the established container lines’ recent freight-rate increase to a small percentage, because of the cheaper alternative service it offered.
