Contract would supply Coast coal to Japan
I'4 Wellington West Coast Resources, Ltd, an associate company of N.Z. Forest Products, Ltd, is actively considering the establishment of a firm contract to supply at least 7.5 M tonnes of coking coal to Japan, over a 15-year period, from the Mount Davy area on the West Coast. This was announced by the W.C.R. chairman (Mr D. D. Walker) yesterday. Arrangements have been made to carry out further investigative drilling this summer, to establish or confirm the quality of the coal, and the viability of mining and exporting it. Mr K. Mori, the chief geo-
legist, and Mr Y. Asami, the deputy general manager of the overseas coal development department of Mitsubishi Mining and Cement Company, Ltd, of Japan, are in New Zealand for discussions on the drilling programme.
Mr Walker exphasised that the investigation is an essential pre-condition to the contract, as are discussions with the New Zealand Government on the mining and export conditions.
The development of the Mount Davy coking coal mining and export project, which is in the hands of West Coast Resources, has been delayed for some time by the depressed state of the steel industry in Japan.
