Cook Strait tunnel

Sir, — S. L. Donaldson’s thoughts on a Cook Strait tunnel (November 6) are realistic. On several occasions during the last five years my brother and 1 have discussed the feasibility of such a project. As he is an experienced marine surveyor and has been involved with the surveying of Cook Strait for the inter-island power cables, I found his ideas both interesting and constructive. He believes the answer is a rail tunnel which could also cater for the transmission of power and gas between the islands and this would eliminate the need for costly replacement of power cables on the seabed. Special trains with drive-on and off facilities could be provided for transporting cars, light trucks etc., through the tunnel. The project could be financed by the West Germans or Japanese, both of whom are financially strong today and we could repay them over a long period with primary produce. — Yours, etc., M. A. WHITE-JOHNSON. November 6, 1978.
