Club robbed of $1M record
The last-minute scratching of the favourite. No Response, from the. Worthy Queen Handicap at Addington yesterday resulted in the Metropolitan Trotting Club failing by less than $6OOO to become the first trotting cup credited with a million dollar oncourse totalisator turnover. “Some $27,000 was returned to betters on No Response,” said the secretary/manager, Mr D. C. Parker.
A crowd of 18,250, against 20,100 in 1977, bet $994,660, by far the greatest at a trotting meeting and an increase of $64,621 over last year. No Response, the favourite, was showing $2.60 for a win when he returned to the birdcage in a distressed condition just as betting on the Worthy Queen Handicap was "finishing. The club's veterinary surgeon ordered his withdrawal from the race. The Worthy Queen Handicap was the final leg of the on-course treble. Tickets on No Response were transferred to the new favourite, Spartan Prince.
Betting from off-course sources, also affected by the late scratching of No Response, amounted to $932,271, a decrease of $35,190.50.
The club’s figures showed a turnover of $1,002,849.50, but that figure included half the pool invested on the snecial T.A.B. double run on the two New Zealands Cups.
