Three polo matches

Two South Island teams, made up of leading players, will this year compete for the Hagley Trophy.

In 1962 the Canterbury A. and P. Association brought two North Island polo teams to Christchurch to play at the Centennial Show. The move was most successful; it led to an immediate revival of the sport in the South Island and by 1968 the game was firmly re-estab-lished in Canterbury. From then on, a South Island team was selected annually to play the North for the Hagley Trophy. This year’s teams will be known as “Northern” and “Southern.” Northern, in yellow jerseys, will comprise Alan Calder (3 , Brian Storer (3) and Collin Clark (2); Southern, in red, by John Askin (3), Rob Meyer (3) and Guy Martin (3). The umpire will be Emmet O’Sullivan, who has played consistently for South Island since 1968. Polo games will be played at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and at 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, with the Hagley Trophy going to the winner of Friday’s match.
